THE TRUTH OF WHAT THE SCRIPTURES ACTUALLY SAY
FAITH VS. WORKS
1. EPHESIANS 2:8-9
Greek:
Te gar chariti este sesosmenoi dia pisteos kai touto ouk ex hymon Theou to doron ouk ex ergon hina me tis kauchsetai
DCTS:
For by grace (chariti - charis - unearned favor, gift leaning, not infusion, freely given benefit)
you are having been saved (sesosmenoi - perfect passive participle - action completed in past with result standing now - saved already, not getting saved)
through faith (dia pisteos - pistis - trust, lean, reliance, not mental assent, not belief about)
and this not from you, of God the gift, not from works (ouk ex ergon - ergon - toil, labor, deeds, employment, works done to earn wage)
so that not anyone may boast (kauchsetai - brag, glory in self).
Chariti = favor already given, sesosmenoi = perfect tense = tetelestai finished stands, pisteos = lean on it, ouk ex ergon = not from employment.
2. ROMANS 3:28
Greek:
Logizometha oun dikaiousthai pistei anthropon choris ergon nomou
DCTS:
We reckon therefore to be justified (dikaiousthai - dikaiosis - lined up, made right, declared righteous, set in right standing)
by faith (pistei - pistis - dative - by means of trust/leaning)
a man apart from works (choris ergon - choris - separate, apart from, without - ergon - works)
of law (nomou - law, system, rules).
Justified not by law-keeping employment, but by leaning. Choris = separated — badal.
3. ROMANS 4:4-5 — Wage vs Favor
Greek:
To de ergazomeno ho misthos ou logizetai kata charin alla kata opheilema to de me ergazomeno pisteuonti de epi ton dikaiounta ton asebe charin logizetai he pistis autou eis dikaiosynen
DCTS:
To the one working (ergazomeno - ergazomai - toiling, laboring for wage)
the wage (misthos - pay, salary, owed)
not is reckoned according to grace (kata charin - according to favor)
but according to debt (opheilema - what is owed).
To the one not working (me ergazomeno - not toiling)
but trusting (pisteuonti - pisteuo - present participle - trusting, leaning, actively relying)
upon the One justifying (dikaiounta - making right)
the ungodly (asebe - impious),
is reckoned the faith (pistis)
of him unto righteousness (dikaiosynen - right standing).
Two ledgers — ergazomeno = wage owed, pisteuonti = charin favor given. God justifies asebe — ungodly — while ungodly, not after cleaning up.
4. GALATIANS 2:16
Greek:
Eidotes hoti ou dikaioutai anthropos ex ergon nomou ean me dia pisteos Iesou Christou kai hemeis eis Christon Iesoun episteusamen hina dikaiothomen ek pisteos Christou kai ouk ex ergon nomou dioti ex ergon nomou ou dikaiothesetai pasa sarx
DCTS:
Knowing that not is justified (dikaioutai)
a man from works of law (ex ergon nomou)
except through faith (dia pisteos - through trust)
of Jesus Christ, and we into Christ Jesus believed (episteusamen - aorist - trusted, leaned)
that we might be justified (dikaiothomen - aorist passive - be made right)
from faith (ek pisteos - out of faith)
of Christ and not from works of law, because from works of law not will be justified (dikaiothesetai - future passive)
all flesh (pasa sarx).
Double negative — ou... ean me — not from works except through faith. Pasa sarx — no flesh can earn by employment.
5. TITUS 3:5
Greek:
Ouk ex ergon ton en dikaiosyne ha epoiesamen hemeis alla kata to autou eleos esosen hemas dia loutrou paliggenesias kai anakainoseos pneumatos hagiou
DCTS:
Not from works (ouk ex ergon - not out of toils)
the in righteousness (en dikaiosyne)
which did we (ha epoiesamen - we did),
but according to the His mercy (eleos - mercy, compassion)
He saved us (esosen - aorist - saved, rescued, completed action)
through washing (loutrou - bathing)
of regeneration (paliggenesias - new birth, again-genesis)
and renewing (anakainoseos - making new again)
of Holy Spirit.
Ouk ex ergon... en dikaiosyne ha epoiesamen — not from righteous works we did — kills self-righteous checklist.
6. 2 TIMOTHY 1:9
Greek:
Tou sosantos hemas kai kalesantos klesei hagia ou kata ta erga hemon alla kata idian prothesin kai charin ten dotheisan hemin en Christo Iesou pro chronon aionion
DCTS:
The One having saved (sosantos - aorist participle - saving act done)
us and having called (kalesantos)
with calling holy, not according to the works (ou kata ta erga)
of us but according to own purpose (prothesin - set forth, plan)
and grace (charin - favor)
the having been given (dotheisan - given)
to us in Christ Jesus before times eternal (pro chronon aionion - before age-times).
Grace given pro chronon aionion — before Genesis 1:1 — not after you kept checklist. Ou kata ta erga hemon — not according to our toils.
7. ROMANS 11:6
Greek:
Ei de chariti ouketi ex ergon epei he charis ouketi ginetai charis ei de ex ergon ouketi estin charis epei to ergon ouketi estin ergon
DCTS:
If by grace (chariti),
no longer from works (ouketi ex ergon - no longer out of works),
since the grace no longer becomes grace, if from works no longer is grace, since the work no longer is work.
Binary — charis vs ergon cannot mix. If you add works to grace, both definitions are destroyed. Ouketi — no longer — cannot be both.
8. ROMANS 4:16 — Why Grace Through Faith
Greek:
Dia touto ek pisteos hina kata charin
DCTS:
Therefore from faith (ek pisteos - out of trust/leaning)
so that according to grace (kata charin - according to favor.
Purpose clause — hina — so that it stays grace. Faith is chosen because faith keeps it as favor. Works turns it to wage.
FINAL SUMMARY ON FAITH VS. WORKS
Charis (χάρις) = unearned favor, leaning gift, not infusion
Pistis (πίστις) = trust, lean, reliance — not mental belief about
Pisteuo (πιστεύω) = I trust, I lean on, I rely
Ergon (ἔργον) = toil, labor, employment to earn wage — misthos
Dikaiousthai (δικαιоῦσθαι) = be lined up, set right — not made morally perfect
Sesosmenoi (σεσῳσμένοι) = perfect passive — having been saved with result standing now — same as tetelestai
Choris / Ouk ex = apart from, not from, separated — badal
Salvation = chariti (favor given pro chronon aionion) -> dia pisteos (through leaning) -> sesosmenoi (stands saved perfect tense) -> ouk ex ergon (not from toils) -> hina me tis kauchsetai (so no bragging) -> kata charin kept as grace.
Anything added to the grace given by GOD and our faith in Christ is considered a work.
